Poland - Scenic Diversity And Cultural Highlights

Poland is a fascinating vacation destination thanks to its various landscapes, the long sandy beaches of the Baltic Sea and the Giant Mountains in the south. Masuria in the northeast of Poland is also known for its natural beauty. 3000 lakes, some of which are connected by canals and rivers, invite visitors to enjoy a wide variety of water sports. Poland also has a lot to offer in terms of culture. There are many historical sights, interesting museums, art exhibitions, gothic churches and magnificent castles. Especially worth seeing are the cities of Warsaw, Krakow and Wroclaw, which inspire with magnificent architecture. The main market in Warsaw, the capital of Poland, is considered one of the most beautiful squares in Europe. The colorful Renaissance and Baroque-era town houses that surround it are eye-catching, as are the Town Hall Tower and St. Mary’s Church. The “cultural center” of Poland, however, is Krakow, the former capital where Polish kings were based. Krakow’s center is one of the best preserved medieval city centers in Europe and offers an overwhelming sight of Baroque, Gothic and Renaissance urban splendor. In the largest city in Lower Silesia, Wroclaw, don’t miss the famous cathedral and the gorgeous botanical gardes. On the Cathedral Island, the oldest part of the city, you will also find the sacral buildings worth seeing and the imposing St. John’s Cathedral.

In addition to impressive buildings, Poland can also shine with important personalities such as the composer and world musician Fryderyk Chopin, who was born near Warsaw. He is considered the great musical representative of Polish Romanticism. In his works, he dealt with the Polish uprisings of his time the longing for a free Poland. In exile in Paris, he was therefore considered the ambassador of Poland. Chopin’s birthplace in Zelazowas Wola now serves as a museum dedicated to Chopin’s memory and as a concert venue.

The Importance Of Religion

Poland is considered the most catholic country in Europe, with around 88% catholics. Therefore, there are many sights of religious significance to visit. The Jasna Góra Monastery with the “Black Madonna” in Czestochowa is considered the spiritual center of Poland and an important pilgrimage site. The Black Madonna is an image of the Virgin Mary, venerated in Poland as a national symbol and the country’s holiest relic. According to legend, the image of the Black Madonna saved the monastery from capture by the powerful Swedish army during a month-long siege in 1655. The small town of Kalwaria Zebrzydowska in southern Poland is also a popular pilgrimage site in Poland because of its replica on the way of the Cross. In 1601, work began on the construction of the seven-kilometer-long Calvary, which features 42 chapels recreating the Passion of Christ and has even been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Hospitality And Courtesy Of The Poles

Poles are known worldwide for their hospitality. If you are a guest of a Polish family, you will be served with plenty of food and drinks. Even the ancestors used to say: “Guest in the house, God in the house”, which means that a guest is offered only the best. Typical for Polish cuisine are dough products, soups and especially meat. Poland is one of the countries with the highest meat consumption in the world. A Polish national dish is Bigos, a stew consisting of pork, bacon, smoked sausage, sauerkraut and mushrooms. There is no exact recipe for hunter’s stew. The ingredients are often simply chosen according to what is available. Another Polish national dish is pierogi. These are savoury filled dumplings, which are served with fried onions and crispy cubes of bacon. In addition to their genereous hospitality, Poles are also known to be exceptionally friendly and polite. Family and a harmonious family life are extremely important to the Poles. On religious holidays, the whole family comes together at the richly set table and eats together.
